FAQ

The Accident and the Government Response

QHas most of Japan been contaminated with radiation?
AOnly certain areas have somewhat high radiation dose rates, and those rates are decreasing year-on-year.

Dose rates are far from high for much of Japan. Only certain areas have somewhat high rates.

Aerial radiation monitoring has been conducted each year since the accident at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, to measure radiation within an 80-kilometer radius of the plant and beyond. The results show that ambient dose rates are decreasing year-on-year, including in the area northwest of the plant where rates have been somewhat high.

Life has not been affected in any way in the Tokyo metropolitan area, which is close to Fukushima Prefecture.
